Something Unique About Me
I was initially destined for the Emily Carr Art School in British Columbia, Canada, but I became interested in Forensic Pathology (blood splatter specialty – is that any surprise with my art background? This was long before Dexter). However, during my medical school years, I did a work-for-tuition program creating the university’s websites, and that’s how I found my love of design, code, and the power of providing access to a world of information online. I started my consulting company shortly after. In addition to that:
- I’ve assisted in autopsies with Dr. Peter Pan in Kenora, Ontario.
- As an ambassador for Canada to Germany, I made the papers as the “Canadian Girl Lost in Berlin.”
- I climbed a mountain in Germany.
- I’ve walked on fire.
- I managed one of the largest art collections in the US.
- As a joke (after someone told a story about meeting Beyonce at Tommy Hilfiger’s party and not knowing who she was), I painted a painting of Beyonce that sat in an art gallery in New York for a time and was then taken home by one of their curators.
I’ve worked as a gas jockey (back in the days when we pumped the gas and checked your oil), a busser at a pizza fast food place, a bartender, a waitress, an executive assistant, an elementary and secondary school curriculum designer for Manitoba Hydro (Electric), a nanny for a family with triplets, manager of two lingerie stores, all the way up to a Head of Product Management, UX/UI, and Design and founder of a UX A11Y team at a Fortune 25 company – why do I mention this? Because we all have interesting and unique life experiences, I believe in surrounding myself with people who know things I don’t and can learn from.
Many people say that sharing personal things isn’t recommended on a resume, but you can read about my skills on LinkedIn or above. Getting to know me is what will set me apart. If my time at Google taught me anything, it’s that what matters most are the people you work with and the work you do.
